New Year, New Me?
The movie 2020 is almost over. Yes, I’m calling it a movie because this year was full of the twists, turns, character development, climax points, and cliffhangers that a typical well-written film consists of. The genre for this movie? - Hmm, I’d say a mix of thriller, drama, romance (for some), and suspense. 2020 is indeed a multi-faceted year. I think we can mutually agree that this year has been a tough year for many of us. Now that it’s almost over (thankfully), many of us are getting into what I call the new year mode.
What is the new year mode? The new year mode happens once a year, during new years day or a couple of days before the new year. During this time, many people write down lists of actionable items they wish to accomplish in the upcoming year; these actionable items may include getting back into shape, joining a club, learning how to make new dishes, to quit smoking, reading more books, etc. We often use the new year as a way to reset, recharge, and re-motivate ourselves.
Now, I wouldn’t be myself if I did not play the role of devil’s advocate once in a while. Quite frankly, I find the new year mode to be a staggering way to achieve your goals…
Let me give you an example; as a Fitness Enthusiast, I have been working out consistently for four years. Sure, some months have been better than others, but consistency has always been essential for me year-round. When the gyms were open, and LA wasn’t in a dry-spell of social activity, I went to the gym at least twice a week. I’ve always noticed how packed the gyms would be around January - March. The consistent gym-goers had an inside joke about how January was the month to avoid the gym if you aren’t a fan of big crowds. Many people made commitments during the beginning of the new year. Then, of course, March came around and the gym was back to normal. I'd usually see the basic crowd of constant gym-goers and maybe a few stragglers from the new year group that decided to expand into the realms of consistency. I always found that to be extremely disappointing.
If you’re reading this and you don’t see an issue with creating new-year goals, let me ask you a quick question. Why are you waiting for the new year? What makes January 1st, 2021 more special than today’s date? Is it the month of January, or is it the number 1? I ask this because I am a fan of self-improvement in all ways, but I think self-improvement should not be limited to a time of the year because you are yourself 24/7. You are in your flesh, you have your spirit, you have your body, you have your mind 24/7, year-round, everyday. Do you feel like your value increases on January 1st, 2021?
I personally think that as humans, we have value every single living day. Every day is an opportunity for you to accomplish your goals and become that person you really want to be. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying not be excited about the New Year (especially one that isn’t 2020), I’m just saying to start on your goals today instead.
Here’s a healthier way to prepare for the New Year instead…
Write out your goals today and begin one of them this week.
So if your goal is eating better, throw out all of your junk food this week and stock your fridge with nutrient-rich foods.
If your goal is to start reading more, buy a book today and begin reading it before the new year.
Reflect on all the lessons you’ve learned in 2020 and write out how you will apply these lessons in your life in 2021.
Plan to spend time with your loved ones.
The way you start the new year is important, so make sure you plan a virtual meeting or that you hangout with the people that have been there for you in 2020.
Again, there’s nothing wrong with being excited for the new year. Just do not use the new year as an excuse to off-set or delay your goals.
